BUSINESS :: The history
The NERA family run business in wine
growing and wine producing was begun in the
‘40s by Guido Nera. He was succeeded, at the
end of the ‘50s, by his son Pietro who with
obstinacy and pride has acquired about 40
hectares of vineyards situated in the
classical D.O.G.C. production areas:
Sassella, Inferno, Grumello, Valgella.
The
generous and assiduous
commitment in cultivating our
vineyards and the meticulous
attention given to each phase
relating to the transformation
of the grape in the Chiura (SO)
cellar which have made this
business one of the most
important and prestigious wine
producers in the Valtellina, is
the work of Stefano Nera,
Pietro’s son, the oenologist.
The production and bottling of
the precious D.O.G.C. wines from
this estate, so sharp and robust,
but so lavish in fruit for those
who love it, are inspired by the
respect for one of the oldest
wine producing traditions,
united with seriousness,
competency, rigorous methods
which follow each procedure. The
first steps towards production
of the best wines with the name
of origin certified and
guaranteed is the work carried
out on the vineyard, the care of
the land, even on the most
impervious and steepest of
slopes. Only through constant
exercising of this ancient craft
made of sacrifices and fatigue
are we able to grow robust and
fertile vines capable of
producing the choicest grapes. |

Simone, the
other son, deals with the marketing side
of the business. Our family’s commitment
was and is founded in the conversion of
the vineyards, in both traditional
terracing and in “’tiers” or
“circumvatingterraces” which consent
mechanized work and improved
photosynthetic activity in the leaves.
The cloning selection and meticulous
care of the vineyard allows us to have
at our disposal the finest raw materials,
thereby obtaining good quality products
to which have been attributed attested
certificates of merit awarded under
various nation-wide and international
contests.
Wine
processing and the maturation are
carried out in our cellars which are
equipped with wine carriers such as oak
barrels, barrique, tonneau and stainless
steel vats. The estate produces all
D.O.C.G. and D. O.C. wines from the
Valtellina (Sforzato, Sassella, Inferno,
Grumello, Valgella), our Grappa is
obtained from the vinasse of the
Sassella, Inferno and Sforzato grape,
Sparkling wine by using the classic
method and moreover the “Riserve della
Casa” (House Reserve) of absolute
prestige amongst which we indicate the “Signorie
Riserva D.O.C.G.” ,an exclusive
product and the new “Paradiso Riserva
D.O.C.G”, created recently, which
complete the prestigious production of
the estate’s Riserve.
Over the
years these have been flanked by two new
wines which have gradually gained more
and more respect, approval and
acknowledgement:
-
Sorèl,
an I.G.T. red wine, a modern and
innovative fruit stemming from an
accurate ‘graping’ of Nebbiolo and
Cabernet Sauvignon grape originating
from our vineyards and produced in
our cellars. This wine is proved for
12 months in small, oak barrels.
-
Rezio,
an I.G.T. white wine, fruit of an
accurate ‘graping’ of Nebbiolo
vinified in white and Chardonnay
originating from our vineyards,
processed and refined in small oak
drums for 8 months. It is marketed
about 18 months after harvesting.
The number
of successes encountered have enabled
the Nera family run business to look
positively to the future, with
particular thanks to the new structure
for the diffusion of wine culture which
will also host refresher courses,
business meetings and company events and
also to host “food and wine” visitors by
letting them taste and discover the
typical products of the Valtellina –
from cheese to cured meats, from
pizzocheri (pasta dish) to our finest
wines, fruit of “heroic viticulture” and
a passion which is passed on from one
generation to the next.
